The birds nesting in my window ledge are back. Remember they got so loud a few weeks ago that I would sometimes shout or thump on the air conditioner to shut them up? Yeah. There was a long silence after that. (I don't think it had anything to do with me.) And I missed them. I wondered why birds would abandon such a carefully-crafted nest. Apparently, they didn't abandon it; they just went on vacation. My guess is that the hatchlings learned to fly and that the nest, as it were, is empty. (Which raises an interesting question: what happens to the eggshells after the chicks hatch? Must Google.) I also guess that the mother sparrow came back to the nest after drop-kicking her kids out of it. This is probably a good time to get that window feeder. music: sparrows chirping
