they're baaaack
The birds nesting in my window ledge are back.

Remember they got so loud a few weeks ago that I would sometimes shout or thump on the air conditioner to shut them up? Yeah. There was a long silence after that. (I don't think it had anything to do with me.) And I missed them. I wondered why birds would abandon such a carefully-crafted nest. Apparently, they didn't abandon it; they just went on vacation.

My guess is that the hatchlings learned to fly and that the nest, as it were, is empty. (Which raises an interesting question: what happens to the eggshells after the chicks hatch? Must Google.) I also guess that the mother sparrow came back to the nest after drop-kicking her kids out of it.

This is probably a good time to get that window feeder.

music: sparrows chirping

I didn't think we had any birdies nesting in our air conditioner but the other night my mom pointed out a half eggshell laying on the ground underneath the air conditioner...hope the birdies are ok :/

Sparrows returning

The mother must clean out the nest at some point, since they do return to reuse it. I was thrilled to discover that the sparrow nest in our climbing roses on the arbor gate in the backyard is populated once again (with three more little piles of grey fluff). Wish I could see them a bit better - I'm not quite tall enough.

Sparrows are just so darn adorable.
