top of the hour
I have the coolest friends. [info]nanila sent me a model of the NASA Apollo capsule and a replica of the patch that all of the Apollo astronauts wore. How cool is that? I'm shameless about my NASA love, and the capsule reminds me of the model spaceships I built with my father when I was young. (Yes, we did. How do you think I became such a space buff?) Thank you! Picture of Apollo capsule on desk to follow.

Adventures in electricity. This is the rule: thou shalt not run the microwave and the air conditioner at the same time, else shalt thy circuit breaker trip and force thee to reset every clock in the apartment.

What did I do to my back this time? It's not my SI joints, for a change. I rolled over in bed and something gave, right in the arch. At first, I couldn't really stand up. Now I can stand and walk, but it hurts. It feels like my back is broken, which is unlikely. Ibuprofen is my friend.

Thanks for the tips on tape-adhesive removal. I can say definitively that Clinique facial toner does not remove it, but it gives my ankles such a healthy glow. The soap-and-dish-towel method works, if I'm willing to rub off some of my skin along with the adhesive. So I'll try the alcohol and the eucalyptus oil.

Time to break in the PowerBook. I'm learning OS X as I go. I'm trying to figure out how to use one DSL modem for two computers. I want to run a long line from this room to the bedroom, so I can use the laptop in there. Is there such a thing as a splitter for an ethernet cable? Do I need to set up a router?

mood: mostly sunny

I'm not sure what you mean by router (I don't see that you'd need what I understand as a router). you'd either need either a hub or a switch, or plug the DSL into an Airport base station, and have Airport cards in all your machines.

(when my back goes, it goes just below the arch, like I've been thumped in the kidney...)

(looking forward to Apollo pics!)

We use DSL on two computers with a hub. That is both the beginning and the end of my knowledge on the matter, unfortunately.

Try peanut butter. I'm serious! It gets gum out of hair, it can handle adhesive tape!

Apollo memories (and Gemini Gemini, too, too)

Ah, your post brought back sweet childhood memories. I still have my 1969 reel-to-reel audio tape of the live NBC-TV coverage of the Apollo 11 landing and moonwalk. A few years ago I found a tape on an old recorder in my late father's workshop while visiting my mom and it was the audio of CBS-TV's coverage of the Apollo 11 launch and landing, plus wonderful interviews with people all around the country in the hours before the landing.

I also have several hours of ABC radio coverage in the first hours after the Apollo 13 accident, and CBS-TV audio of the re-entry and landing, about 4-5 hours in all.

I followed the Apollo and Gemini flights avidly and vaguely remember the Mercury flights. I'm still fascinated by NASA TV coverage of shuttle flights, even if all they show is a globe with the orbital track across its waist.

During the Gemini program I sometimes played astronaut in the back yard. Your post reminded me of group shots of my brothers and sisters and me in home movies. I was the one holding the bright blue model Gemini capsule at arm's length, moving it slowly "in orbit" across the frame.

Oh, to be 11 again.
